The People

IF you’re in a private place right now, Look at the label of an item of clothing you are wearing.

Where do most of them say they are made?

India, China, Bangladesh....some other random country?

Woman Working

Why?

Because it is cheaper to make clothes abroad as labour is cheaper, so many high street companies transfer the production to these countries (known as outsourcing).

Is this a Bad thing?

Not completely, the economies of the developing countries are increasing and getting stronger. One example of this is India, which now has the 13th largest Gross National Product

But?

The garment workers in India will only earn 10 pence for an item of clothing costing £20 in the UK. They also do not get a living allowance, could you support a family with £24 a month?

Who's Buying these clothes?

WE ARE! Designs seen on catwalks can be seen on the high street within six weeks. This adds pressure on the workers to produce more clothes in less time with virtually less than a fair share of the profit. With 40% of all our clothes bought at Value (low cost) retailers, the situation is only worsening.

Who's most affected?

Women and young people! 11.2 million Young people aged between 5 and 14 are working in India. Women make up 75% of the workforce and are vulnerable to verbal and physical abuse.

What's being done about this

‘The Asia Floor Wage’ (AFW) is a response to this problem, developed by an alliance of NGOs, trade unions and academics from Asia, Europe and North America. The AFW is a proposal for a floor wage for garment workers in Asia. The campaign is to set a regional decent wage for garment manufacturing workers in Asia. The wage is meant to meet a worker’s family’s basic need, food and non-food costs.
